TAKING CARE OF WHAT'S IMPORTANT

Both of our nurseries follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The framework became statutory in September 2008. All providers are required to use the EYFS to ensure that whatever setting parents choose, they can be confident that their child will receive a quality experience that supports their development and learning. It brings together the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage (2000), the Birth to Three Matters (2002) framework and the National Standards for Under 8s Daycare and Childminding (2003).

This single document will guide all practitioners working with children from birth to five and will be the basis for Ofsted Inspection Requirements.

It contains four distinct but complimentary themes.

Learning and Development recognises that children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates, and that all areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connected.

This framework ensures "the child" as an individual in the central focus and starting point for all planning activities and continuous provision within all areas of the nursery.

Every Child Matters
Every Child Matters is the government agenda that focuses on bringing together services to support children and families. It sets out five major outcomes for children:

  • staying safe;
  • enjoying and achieving;
  • making a positive contribution;
  • economic well-being.
Positive Relationships describes how children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person. The commitments are focused around respect; partnership with parents; supporting learning; and the role of the key person.

Enabling Environments explains that the environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children's development and learning.

The commitments are focused around observation, assessment and planning; support for
